Overview
Lucifer is a hit fantasy crime drama series that first premiered in 2016. Developed by Tom Kapinos, the show is based on characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg for DC Comics’ The Sandman series, and it was later spun off into its own comic book series published by DC’s Vertigo imprint. The TV adaptation follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the Devil, who abandons his throne in Hell to live in Los Angeles, where he opens a nightclub and starts working as a civilian consultant for the LAPD.
With a blend of crime-solving, supernatural elements, and plenty of witty banter, Lucifer offers a fresh and entertaining take on the classic figure of the Devil. The series balances humor, drama, and romance, while exploring deeper themes of redemption, morality, and identity.
Plot Summary
The central story of Lucifer revolves around Lucifer Morningstar, who becomes bored with his role as the ruler of Hell. He decides to retire to Earth and indulge in the pleasures of human life. In Los Angeles, he runs a nightclub called “Lux” and revels in his hedonistic lifestyle. However, his life takes a turn when he gets involved in a murder investigation and ends up becoming a civilian consultant to the LAPD, using his powers to help solve crimes.
Throughout the series, Lucifer partners with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), and the two develop a close, often complicated relationship. Lucifer’s supernatural ability to compel people to reveal their deepest desires proves useful in investigations, but as he spends more time with humans, Lucifer begins to question his own existence, purpose, and the concept of free will.
